2075 grams, that is.  Or 4 lbs 9 oz in English.

For four stinkin’ nights in a row, that has been Nathan’s weight.  What are the chances of his weight remaining exactly the same for three days?  The positive side of it is that he is maintaining his weight and not losing…but he really needs to start gaining again.  They have started fortifying his gavauge feeds (which will be three out of eight of his feeds today) with an amino-acid based formula to boost his calorie intake.  At this point, it looks like we may have to give him one or two fortified bottles a day when he comes home.  I am hoping that the breastfeeding picks up and that won’t be necessary, but it’s something we have to think about, especially if we want him to come home next week.

Please pray for alertness and endurance when Nathan breastfeeds.  Please pray that he will have an increase in his weight tonight!

  1. Oh dear! Sounds so very frustrating…I know you want the weight gain, I know you did not want the fortifying, but so many blessings with Nathan…keep patient it will happen…you are the queen of breastfeeding! Make sure you are taking care of yourself, maybe that is what is happening, you need enough rest and strength to feed him! Keep smiling!
    We love you ALL!

  2. Karen,
I just want you to know that we’re praying for your family.

We’re still in the NICU too and in a very similar situation. We were supposed to go home today, but after a week without any episodes, he had a little apnea this morning. Probably because he came down with a little cold. So we’re on hold, stuck at the NICU for a few more days or another week. I miss my older boys so much and we’re still hoping and praying to be home for Christmas. I’ve moved into the NICU here too to breastfeed around the clock.

We’re doing 2 fortified bottles a day and the other 6+ feeds by breast. It’s working and Zephan is growing quickly. He is up to 4 pounds 15 ounces.

Sometimes this feels so lonely, but I know your family is going through so much of the same stuff. I don’t know what God’s doing in all of this, but I hope that he will be glorified.

  3. Hope he ended up gaining last night! Preemies can be so unpredictable, and you’re probably taking it extra hard since you were hoping to be home next week. Praying that can still happen!!

Praying for strength, patience, and that Nathan gets breastfeeding soon!
