Nathan is doing well today! When we went in to see him this morning, he had already been off of the ventilator since about 5 am! He is on the CPAP at a level 5 and room air (21% oxygen), and doing great! He has been having a few episodes of apnea and bradycardia (as expected for a 28 weeker!), so they started him on caffeine. Asher was on caffeine during his stay in the NICU, as well. It stimulates the brain so that the baby remembers to breathe. They were planning on starting his feeds tonight, but hadn’t done it yet at 8 pm, as originally planned. Depending on how he is doing tonight, they may start at the midnight feed. 1 mL every 4 hours for now!
Nathan had apparently been doing super well for his nurse this evening, but just as I came in, he was desatting (low oxygen intake) over and over again. Despite having had a premie before, it was very scary. I just kept praying over him and speaking the meaning of his middle name – God will strengthen – as a blessing over him.
The underside of Nathan’s nose was damaged a little bit from the ventilator, so they decided to put him on a different type of CPAP (a mask, instead of prongs that go into each nostril) so that the scab can heal.
While I was visiting him tonight, Nathan had his eyes wide open for a little while. He has the same big, dark eyes that his brothers have! I think he looks a lot like Asher, but I can’t decide if it’s because he is in the same NICU and so close in size…
